Portrait of Juan Zorrilla

The author

Juan Zorrilla

Juan Zorrilla is an Australian-Colombian writer, born in Bogotá in 1974. An engineer by trade, he writes fiction: quiet stories set on the thresholds where the familiar turns strange, in which surreal things happen and no one thinks to be surprised. He lives in Houston, Texas, runs errands around the world, and founded Sighthound Press.

He is the author of Austin City Limit (2024) and several short stories, including the prized Escape from Bula, OH. His work is available on BiblioBoard through the Indie Texas project, in libraries across the USA.

His influences include Haruki Murakami, Julio Cortázar, Alexandra Kleeman, Michel Houellebecq, Patrick Süskind, Gabriel García Márquez, Leonora Carrington and a whole bunch of abstract and surreal painters.

The press

We publish the impossible as though it were ordinary.

Stories for the spaces between the familiar and the impossible.

Sighthound Press is an independent literary press publishing liminal fiction. Work that treats the impossible as a natural part of everyday life. No explanations offered. No epiphanies.

Sighthound Press makes liminal fiction — quiet stories set on the thresholds where the familiar turns strange. Surreal things happen, and no one thinks to be surprised. Understated, faintly impossible.

Praise
What a wonderful style this writer has—quick, terse, surprising, open to the surreal, to a sense of urgency, to great wit. The most dramatic parts of this story—the escape, the destination—seem somehow productively to live in the background. It’s the immediate, often absurd present that dominates here, a present characterized by kaleidoscopic events, by the impossible, by the workings of an agitated mind. There’s so much to admire here, particularly this writer’s ability to let his story unfold slowly, fascinatingly.
